Experiment Number – 1
Aim:- To study the structure and function of the skin with the help of a Model.
Reference:- Dr . Gupta G.D, Dr . Sharma Shailesh Practical
manual of Human Anatomy and Physiology, Jan 2019 5th Edition,
Nirali Publication page number__.
Requirement:- Specimen or Model of the Skin.
Theory:-
Skin is the largest organ of
the body. It is also a sense organ and also an excretory organ.
The skin has three layers -
1. Epidermis
2. Dermis
3. Hypodermis
1. Epidermis:- It is the outer or upper layer of the skin. It
contains 5 layers of cells known as –
1. Stratum Corneum
2. Stratum Granulosum
3. Stratum Spinosum
4. Stratum Leucidum
5. Stratum Basale
(a) Epidermis contains pores,
hairs opening of sweat gland and Sebaceous gland, and Melanocytes (Melanin Pigment secreting gland).
(b) It is the thinnest layer of
the skin.
(c)
Blood Vessels are absent.
2. Dermis:- It is the middle layer of the skin and the thickest layer
of the skin.
* It contains the Sweat gland,
sebaceous gland, the root of the hair, Erector Pilli Muscles, Some Blood vessels, and
Some fat cells.
3. Hypodermis:- This layer is the last and innermost layer of the
skin.
* It contains fat cells.
* This layer also contains blood vessels in the large amount.

Functions of the Skin
· * Acts as a sense
organ.
· * Also acts as an excretory organ.
· * Protects from
Micro–Organisms.
· * Protects from
physical injury.
· * Melanin which is
present in the skin provides color to the body's skin.
· * Synthesis of Vitamin
D3 with the help of sunlight.
· * Also protects
from UV- Rays.
· * Skin also acts in
thermoregulation.
· * Also helps in osmoregulation.
· * Helps in Homeostasis.
Result:- Anatomy and Physiology of skin studied in the lab.
